What they’re really teaching is that the people in charge don’t know the definition of a word called ‘moderation’. What they’re really teaching is that there is no ‘human’ factor when it comes to the rules set in place by the school. What they’re really teaching is that it doesn’t matter what you do or how good a person you are, the system WILL find a way to slap something on you to get you in trouble or arrested. It is too likely that these kids will grow up feeling wronged by people in authority, which will only lead to MORE rebellion. That or they’ll become sheep, afraid to speak out or do anything lest they get in trouble - no matter whether it’s right, wrong, an accident, or if they were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. And maybe they won’t speak up when something really dangerous happens, because they won’t want to see a friend get in so much trouble for ‘something that doesn’t really matter’. They’re being taught the wrong lessons. And it’s our fault. As adults, we should be reinforcing the idea of a society that tries to be fair and cares about everyone in it - NOT a society that demonizes you from the time you’re five years old, that brands you for life after doing something as a stupid kid that shouldn’t’ve gotten you in so much trouble, anyway. I know many of the people on here may not be adults, or may be young adults that agree with me, or may be older adults that agree with me. I am also fully aware many may DISAGREE with me. That’s fine. This is just my opinion, not a fact, not an iron-clad prediction of the future. But my grandma thinks like a conservative nutjob, and watches Fox News. She’s 84 this year, and paranoid, and doesn’t remember a lot of things as well as she used to. She’s also quietly racist about Obama having been elected president. My parents are liberals. My Gramma gets mad that most packaging in this country is in both Spanish and English, now. I don’t care. I think it’s cool, a way to get exposed to Spanish on a daily basis. I love my grandma. But some of the ideals propagated by her generation, the rules set in place by those that came of age in WWII… they don’t quite apply, in some ways, anymore. Blind acceptance of whatever the nation-state deems worthy being one of them. I think it’s about time for another movement, like in the 60s. But we need to be quieter. It has to come from people willing to change the way the bureaucracies run, now. It has to come from people willing to try and change the steely grip the military and police have on our society. It has to come from people wanting to inject ‘humanity’ back into our over-commercialized, materialist, consumerist society that is quickly devolving towards fascism. People need to be less afraid - they need to give, not be so paranoid about their neighbors maybe being in a terrorist cell. That suspicion is killing this country. It’s killing who we were, and making us into one of our worst enemies.
